Thank you to our early supporters for being with us on this journey. Like many of you, we consider Tesla to be a leader in innovation and immediately recognized Cybertruck’s potential back in 2019. As a small startup, we wanted to share what the past few years have looked like and our plans for 2025. While we couldn’t have predicted Tesla’s production delays, our team has done everything we can to keep this project moving forward. Now that we’ve tested both the Cybertruck and our campers first-hand, we feel more confident than ever in bringing our products to market.

Our Story:

When we started working towards Space Campers in 2020, the RTT and aftermarket industry for trucks was booming post-COVID. Many of the existing camper companies out there were over a year backordered and we had our doubts that anyone was going to pivot and develop something new for Cybertruck’s shape. That’s when we set out to build a camper exclusively for Cybertruck, which in our eyes, was redefining what electric vehicles could be.

Space Campers is not affiliated with Tesla and has always been an independent effort. In the first two years, we designed our wedge camper down to the last bolt using dimensions from Tesla’s initial prototypes with these non-negotiables:

  1. Be durable and lightweight.
  2. Keep everything modular so our designs can be built up.
  3. Match the Cybertruck. We want to feel OEM with features that integrate seamlessly.

In the early days of perfecting our shape and developing these custom features, we took the opportunity to file for design and utility patents that also included The Wedge and our truck cap. Once the designs were finished, we started rendering and launched our presale in 2022, only to find we had a great community and a lot of enthusiasm waiting for us. The years of conversations we have had with our customers on what they want to see in a camper has been such a major asset.

Around this point, we were heavily considering crowdfunding to raise the money for R&D but with Cybertruck production delayed, we hesitated to move forward without more presales, a physical prototype, and clarity on when Tesla was going to start deliveries on the truck.

As we gained more traction and your presales proved demand for our campers, we started collaborating with an RTM composite manufacturer in California and brought on $100,000 of outside investment. The plan has always been to use RTM tooling to produce both our truck cap and wedge campers, and for anyone outside of the industry, while unmatched in efficiency, the upfront tooling costs of RTM are substantial.

We didn’t have Cybertruck’s final dimensions or the funding to pursue RTM tooling, but we wanted to get our hands dirty, prove our concept, and look for ways to enhance our design. In 2023, we used our connections with a machine shop in Washington to build a prototype camper from the ground up. Doing everything ourselves was a massive learning opportunity, even if the processes we turned to weren’t what we planned to use for final production.

Check Out Our Prototype Buildout:

We debuted this prototype at the Tesla Takeover in our hometown of San Luis Obispo and by November 2023, Cybertruck fulfillment was just a few months away. In January 2024, we scanned a Cybertruck and confirmed the final dimensions for both our wedge camper and truck cap.

In the background of product development, our team has been working full-time to raise the investment we need to start production on The Wedge. While waiting for the truck to come out, it felt like we saw the era of successful crowdfunding campaigns come and go. We’ve spoken to many business owners who spent nearly as much as they raised on promoting their campaigns, so we shifting our focus to pitching to angel groups and private investors. We anticipated with Cybertruck being on the road and having the presales and prototype to prove our concept, those discussions could help us move forward. One angel group told us our pitch was the best they’d seen, but ultimately we’ve struggled with misleading and untrue headlines about the truck causing uncertainty among investors.

Without a clear path to funding, we pivoted our production plan to bring truck caps to market ahead of The Wedge and start out with fewer upfront costs. In August, we had a stroke of luck and connected with Universal Aerospace and Stoddard International, whose founders supplemented our R&D and lent us the shop space and machines to build the first article of our truck cap.

Now we have materials on the way for a limited production run of truck caps in 2025 and we plan to operate as a custom-build shop, modifying caps with RTTS alongside our in-house and other aftermarket accessories.

Our Path To The Wedge:

The R&D and production plan for The Wedge is finished and we are ready to build, but moving forward will rely on finding the right investor or generating enough revenue from truck cap sales to fund production ourselves. We have every hope to start development on The Wedge this summer, but our timelines will remain unclear until we reach our funding milestones.

To our Wedge reservation holders: your patience and support mean the world to us. We know the wait is frustrating and we are committed to delivering a camper that exceeds your expectations. As always, deposits for The Wedge are fully refundable, and we’re happy to transfer your reservation to a truck cap. Your continued support not only makes this project possible but also strengthens our position as we push forward to make The Wedge a reality.
